Hand on heart I've never slung a leg over one nor would I. But I can understand why people buy them, They have no idea what a proper bike will do or how efficient they are. It's a sad state of affairs but I'm probably not alone in doing this.

When I was a kid rod the 60's I had Raleigh bikes and assumed they were still bikes. Around 10 years ago I bought a 24 gear Raleigh hybrid for around euros - it looked seriss and it was a Raleigh I had been brainwashed into believing everything British was the best as a kid.
Well it turned out to be the crappiest BSO ever. It was a US Raleigh thrown together with the cheapest available components. We bought a bike a fair few years back that really couldn't be called that for my oldest daughter. Replaced the seat with a gel seat from Italy and I could sit on it all day. It's been a bloody great bike and later this year I shall strip it down completely and get it powder coated in a nice new BOLD colour then replace the other parts. I think the old girl deserves it. Great article, have been googling for info on bad bikes, let me tell you in the Sfries it is even worse. Also even among bike specialists high volume chains are taking over and hurting smaller shops. Your mileage may vary when it comes to Halfords bike mechanics, but I thankfully have had nothing but sries good experience with them to date.
